Minimal//Liminal: A selection of new pieces

Minimal and liminal in nature, the way these pieces have evolved is reminiscent of Japanese Ink washes and their use of negative space. This wasn’t a conscious choice when I began, but a little searching has led me to the meaning of Yohaku no Bi (余白の美) –  the Japanese aesthetic concept of the beauty found in the empty space.

“Pine Trees” by Hasegawa Tōhaku (Japanese, 1539–1610)

It has though been a conscious decision to pursue the concept of dissolving form as what feels like a natural stage in the journey towards minimalism. It also feels complementary to the music I am currently listening to, including the recent discovery of Zaké (ambient drone artist).

As it appears, the encroaching light and mist become an amplifier of the relic of form.

The above images have been selected from an ongoing series created using a combination of methods and materials, including photography and soft pastels.
