He has grounding in both traditional and digital print, specializing in etching during his foundation and training in all aspects of print during his time at an Oxford print company. A lack of creativity in his job led him to study Illustration at Kingston University. Nowadays Matt Black likes to create images utilizing drawing, photography, found ephemera and textures, using digital technology as a way of achieving the rawness of traditional printing by amalgamating each of the original elements. Matt also hopes that this method of working also instills an atmospheric and poetic quality for which he strives.
